Hats off to Basketball Australia

NBL Rd 19 - Hawks v Blaze

I've had a few cracks at Basketball Australia in the past. And not without reason, too. This is a crucial stage for the sport in this country and the opportunity for reform - genuine reform - can't be squandered.

But it's time to give credit where it's due.

Some of the decisions made by BA in recent times have been music to the ears. They've signed on with One HD and Ten. They've brought back the Sydney Kings. And on a much more minor note, they've singed on with AND1 as the league-wide apparel partner (not major news, but positive nonetheless).

It's enough to make you overlook the fact they'd somehow allowed Fox the right to bid last. It's also enough to make you ignore Larry Sengstock's comments last year that, "While we won't have Sydney or Brisbane playing ... I'm very confident they'll be back in 2010."

On the TV deal thing, we got what we wanted anyway.

On the bringing back the Kings, Bullets and (reduce enthusiasm here) Dragons thing, well, we'd take just about anything at this stage.

If all this sounds like a back-handed compliment, it is. But hey, the NBL is going to be on free-to-air next season. And they'll have a team Sydney actually in some slight manner gives two hoots about.

Oh yeah, and they'll all be dressed in pretty matching uniforms.

Is this a great time for the NBL or what?
